westbound you can see traffic is looking good heading out to the mccarthur maze. when you get to the maze the traffic there also looks good at the toll plaza. this morning we are looking at the bay bridge and that traffic looks good coming into san francisco. it is 4:29 let's go back to the desk. in over night news the chp is looking to witnesses to a dead latent on a san mateo freeway. three young adults were killed on highway 92 in foster city. tara moriarty tells us about the many questions that surround the tragic crash. tara. >> reporter: the chp doesn't know exactly what caused the crash. we do know it happened here near the foster city boulevard exit. it created quite a traffic jam last night. we're standing several yards away from the actual scene of the accident. but when we drove by earlier, we could see there was still a down power pole. this happened last night shortly before 10:00. investigators shut down two lanes of eastbound 92 and three hours after the driver of what

looks like a silver car slammed into the guardrail. the car knocked over a utility pole and a box. the vehicle was virtually unrecognizable after the crash. five people were inside. two people were pronounced dead at the scene. >> it appears the vehicle was traveling in the number three lane. it lost control of the vehicle. and over turned when it hit the rail. >> reporter: now one person did receive minor injuries and another person walked away unharmed. it is not known how many of the victims were actually wearing seat belts and chp says it is looking into whether this was alcohol related. just by judging by the crumpled up metal the car was going at a pretty good rate of speed. this is what the highway patrol will be looking at. live in foster city i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. another deadly accident to tell you about. this one in richmond.

that crash caused a traffic nightmare last night on westbound interstate 80 north of cutting boulevard. it happened just before 9:00. now the chp says five people were in a black suv when the driver lost control and flipped over while trying to avoid a pothole. one person died at the scene. new this morning the search is on for a hit and run driver responsible for a power outage in san lorenzo. the driver smashed into high tension power lines around 1:30 this morning. the driver then ran away from the crash scene. at one point there was 3,000 homes and businesses without power in the neighborhood. that number is down to about 1,000. the super bowl bound 49ers are at the big easy this morning. fans waved 49er faithful flags as the team took off from new orleans around noon yesterday. five hours later the team touched down in new orleans for a week of practices before the

big game. the odds are on the miners side. they are favored to beat the ravens. the 49ers have settled in at their new headquarters. they are set up at the marriott in downtown new orleans. fans were there to greet them as their puss pulled up. some players posed for photos. head coach jim harbaugh talked about his plans for the hectic week ahead. >> we will try to make it like a normal week. being here on sunday in the city starting monday like it's a week leading up to a monday game. >> they cast aside worries about being super bowl rookies. harbaugh says his team gets fresher under pressure. the niners are capturing all the super bowl attention in new orleans right now but that will change later on today. the ravens are scheduled to arrive in new orleans later on

this afternoon. john harbaugh and a few key players will sit down for a news conference about an hour later. wees a have a team in new orleans. they will have -- immediately following the super bowl you will see a live local post game show right here on ktvu channel 2. the party has begun in new orleans. coming up at 5:30 we will have a live report from joe phon city with a look at how fans are already celebrating. a judge will hold a hearing today for a man accused of killing seven people at oikos university. he is being held without bail at the alameda county jail on seven counts of murder for the mass killing on the oikos university campus last april. prosecutors say he flew into a violent rage because he was angry about a tuition refund. also this morning a judge

will hear closing arguments in the retrial of debra madden. she is the former san francisco police crime lab technician accused of stealing cocaine from the facility. that led to the dismissile of hundreds of drug cases. madden's first trial ended in a mistrial. she admits she took a small amount of cocaine from the lab but that was only what was spilled during weighing. inofficious on a nightclub firing in brazil that killed more than 250 people. pyrotechnics used by the band may have sparked the fire. many of the victims died from smoke inhalation. others were trampled to death while trying to escape. >> people who were inside the facility informed us when they came out that security guards blocked the exit to prevent people there from leaving. that is when the crowd started panicking and the tragedy grew worse. >> fire officials say about

2,000 people were in the club. that is double the maximum occupancy. they also say the club's license was expired. today here at home investigators will be back at the scene of a major fire in fairfield friday night. it was completely destroyed. no word on what caused it. fire investigators are hoping to find more clues when they search through debris later this morning. at 10:00 this morning san francisco mayor ed lee will deliver his first state of the city address. nary has been mayor for two years but his first year he was opponented to fill the end of gavin newsom's year. supreme court justice sonya sotomayor will be in the bay area. it recounts her life from a bronx housing project all the way to the federal bench.

the event begins at noon. it is sold out. statute of limitations senator dianne feinstein is admitting her new ban to ban assault weapons faces an uphill battle. >> what does bother me, i have seep weapons swanned and grown and now in the hands of younger and younger people over these years. i think you reach a point as i said earlier where enough is enough. >> senator feinstein introduced the bill last week which will introduce the number of rounds in a magazine to ten. a new poll shows strong support for an assault weapons ban. the public safety committee will see demonstrations of firearms that are illegal here in the state. they will also hear testimony by police, researchers and advocates working against gun violence and gun rights groups. a public hearing that was

scheduled today on the feature of pete's harbor has been postponed. the city council did after the developer and save pete's harbor group ask the for a delay. the california state lands commission is expected to clarify at its meeting in april whether the lease on the outer harbor could be transferred to a developer. without the lease the development deals could fall through. new this morning beta breakers is looking for a new sponsor. it is not talking about why it's dropping out. beta breakers organizers say the upcoming may 19th race will go on with or without a replacement sponsor. time now 4:37. the city of san francisco proposing $200 million worth of changes to the way people ride bikes over the next five years. the city wants to build 12 miles of new bike lanes and upgrade 50 miles of existing

and a cool breezy day. we're going to end january with warmer weather once we get past today. next couple of theys look to be is upny and warmer after today. we will see a couple little returns. there are things dying out already. 30s on the temps or 40s. temperatures held up because of the cloud cover. it will be cool. you can see the cold air dropping down. we're on the western edge of this system. a chilly, chilly start. highs in the 50s here. mid 50s for almost everybody. not much of a change. then tomorrow morning we start off cold and then sunny. in fact, we will get into the mid 60s on wednesday and thursday. steve, thank you. the san jose sharks play on ice but they are looking hot with only five games played in the shortened season so far they the sharks have won all of them. played the vancouver canucks

the country is marking is a sad anniversary today. 27 years ago the space shuttle challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff. all seven crew members were killed. the explosion was traced to the cold weather. the president declared a state of emergency in areas hit hard by protests. over the weekend 50 people were killed because of unrest in the country. police fired tear gas while protestors pelted them with rocks. the clashes shows how turmoil is deepening in egypt. french troops in mali have gained control of the airport in timbuktu and fighting their way into the city center. the united states has also stepped up its involvement in the conflict by conducting air

fueling. a bipartisan group of senators and president obama are pushing immigration reform this week. the group of eight senators will announce their immigration reform plan at a news conference this afternoon. the senators will call for increased border security, a guest worker program, and a pass to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants currently here in the united states. tomorrow president obama travels to las vegas where he will also push for immigration reform. time now 4:45. and today president obama will also meet with police chiefs from three communities that experienced mass shootings last year. it's part of his administration push to address gun violence. the communities invited include aurora, colorado. oak creek, wisconsin where six people died in a sikh temple assault. and newtown, connecticut where 26 people were killed. a report this morning says japan's government eased its

>> no, but i'm hungry. good morning, everybody let's take a look at the commute now. traffic continues to look good on 80 and 580 and interstate 880. and if you're trying to get into san francisco, it has been a soar nice drive from oakland to the city. we're looking at the peninsula as well. traffic does look good on 101 heading down to 92 opinion and beyond that into the south bay if you are driving on south bay freeways we're off if a good start there. and get into the south bay on interstate 880 looks good. 4:47 let's go to steve. thank you, sir. we do have a system dropping straight down out of the north. not a lot of moisture. it looks like a partly cloudy to mostly cloudy morning. then mostly sunny and breezy and cooler today. tomorrow morning we will be coder. once this system dives by it

chp searching for the drivers that spun -- shutting down traffic. there is video was posted to facebook shows three cars spinning in circles near the oakland coliseum. right in the middle of the afternoon. ktvu reporter alex savidge is going to have more on what the chp is looking for and reactions from drivers coming up at 5:00. also in oakland a crash involving an ambulance and a tanker is being investigated. that happened at about 9:30 last night on interstate 80 right near the powell street onramp. a tanker somehow hit an ambulance and crashed into a guardrail. the tanker was empty so fortunately no hazardous materials threat. and also the ambulance was not transporting anyone at the time. no one was hurt. san francisco firefighters say years of intense training paid off when they rescued an elderly man trapped inside his

burning home. fire crews were called to a home yesterday afternoon. they found the garage burning, the home filled with smoke, and elderly man that could not walk in an upstairs bedroom. firefighters immediately got the man safely out of the home and rushed him to the hospital. >> we train and train and train for this. and it makes it all worthwhile. it's a risk. we won't take risks without the rewards. and knowing that this is at stake, we took considerable risks and it was all worth it. >> this morning the man is still in the hospital being treated for smoke inhalation. his condition is still not known. investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. police in san rafael are hoping newly released surveillance video will help them find a bank robber. investigators say the man shown here robbed a west america bank on francisco boulevard january 14th. there is a closer look at this face. he is described as white in his

30s between 5'6" and 6'1". 160-200 pounds with a muscular build. this marks the september bank robbery in several weeks. east palo alto police are asking witnesses to come forward as they investigate the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man. friends of lamont coleman gathered yesterday on capitol avenue. coleman was gunned down saturday night at 9:00 as he walked down the street. investigators say it's unclear why he was in the area and don't know if he was targeted. >> kind of disappointing. i thought our city was really making a lot of progress. >> authorities have been looking into coleman's pass including a 2011 charge related to the accidental shooting of his girlfriend. they do not believe that is a factor. tomorrow a public hearing will be held to improve the green bray interchange. cal trans wants to demolish a bicycle and pedestrian overcrossing and build an elevated freeway. transportation officials say

the $143 million project is needed to improve safety and reduce congestion. critics say the project costs too much. tomorrow's public meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. at the redwood high school cafeteria in lark burg. 4:54 is the time. back over to sal. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good. we've had road work in this area. but that is beginning to be picked up. you can see the freeway is absolutely good. if you drive through you might see remanence of the road work. you will not see many delays in this area. also the morning commute at the san mateo bridge looks good heading out to the high-rise and over to foster city. no major problems across that span or across the dumbarton bridge. if you are driving on the nimitz freeway nearby, that traffic looks good. across the bay we talked about the san mateo 101 and 280 still look very nice. we have partly cloudy skies. system dropping in right there looks pretty nice.
